195 Senior Public Officials Declared Incorrect Information Before The National Audit Office

In the case of 195 senior public officials (19 MPs, 14 deputy ministers, 33 judges, 19 prosecutors, and 50 mayors and deputy mayors), there are discrepancies between the financial interests as disclosed in the declarations submitted to the National Audit Office (NAO) and the information available in public registers, NAO President Valeri Dimitrov said Wednesday, cited by BTA.

According to e-zine mediapool.bg, the most frequent irregularities are a failure to disclose participating interests in commercial corporations, above all by the officials' spouses. Motor vehicles, income, and real estate have been omitted in the declarations as well.

A total of 5,857 persons submitted declarations disclosing their financial interests in 2006.

This is the first such check of the veracity of the information disclosed by the declarants, Dimitrov said. So far the NAO merely accepted the declarations and made public the names of those who failed to submit them.

Dimitrov noted that the NAO is not authorized to check bank accounts.

The names of senior public officials who have misdeclared their interests have been posted on the NAO website. The results of the checks will be referred to the National Revenue Agency which can take measures, including tax and financial audits, in line with the effective legislation.
