French supermarket chain Carrefour will build a hypermarket in Stara Zagora on Zora Blvd, in front the of the DZU building, the city's website announced.

Builders are already cleaning the site and preparing it for the start of the construction works.

The local authorities said they have not yet issues a construction license for this site, but confirmed that a Carrefour hypermarket will be built there.

This will be the biggest hypermarket in the country.

The appearance of a big player such as Carrefour, which in terms of sales is number one in Europe and number two in the world (behind Wall-Mart), will surely change the retail sector in Bulgaria, analysts said a year ago when the French group opened its first stores in the country – in Sofia and Burgas.

Experts also commented that only now we can really say we have hypermarkets in Bulgaria, as a store of that type should occupy an area of at least 10,000 sq.m and offer a large variety of goods, from food and clothes to electronics.
