255,910 people were registered with the Unemployment Office as jobless in December. This is 4.3% (10,635 persons) up compared with the previous month. However, it is 81,886 down compared with the same month 2006.
The unemployment rate is below than the average for the country in 9 regions. In December almost all regional districts in Bulgaria recorded a slight increase in unemployment levels. Only in the capital city Sofia and in Sofia region a slight decrease, of respectively, 0.03 and 0.08 percentage points was witnessed.
9,435 new jobs were announced by the Unemployment Office during the final month of 2007. This is 14,000 less than in November. The decline is attributed to less vacancies on employment projects, which is typical for the end of a calendar year.
8,976 unemployed people started a job in December. 88.5% (7,943) of them found it via their local Labor Desk office.
The average unemployment rate for the country 2007 stands at 7.75% for the entire 2007, or 1.86 percentage points down from 2006.
