Economy Ministry to Come out with Weekly Reports on Retail Food Prices

The Ministry of Economy and Energy will come out with weekly reports on basic food retail prices in the country, Economy and Energy Minister Peter Dimitrov told journalists Wednesday. The weekly reports will feature information about 15 foods with minimum, maximum and average prices.

Quoted foods will include three kinds of bread, flour type 500, yoghurt and fresh cow's milk, white brine cheese, Vitosha cheese, eggs, pork with bones, boneless pork, frozen and cooled chicken, sausages and sunflower oil.

Once a month the government will give more detailed information about 15 cities in the country in each of which 14 large retail stores will be monitored. The objective, the minister said, is to generate consumer, not state-originated pressure on merchants where people will avoid shopping where the goods are expensive.

Dimitrov said there are cases of enormous difference in prices, quoting as examples price differences of 2.90 to 10.40 leva per kg frozen chicken, or white brine cheese selling between 4.17 and more than 7 leva a kilo
