Slovenian capital hosted the EU Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs meeting. At the forum Bulgaria was represented by Minister of Interior Rumen Petkov and Deputy Minister Goran Yonov.
Bulgarian delegation backs up the External Dimensions of Justice and Home Affairs Policy Strategy implementation. Efforts shall be focused on the expansion of co-operation with all countries, included in the EU nieghbouring policy in order fight against illegal migration, trafficking in drugs and weapons, terrorism, organized crime and corruption to be supported.
Detailed analysis of the means safeguarding the successful implementation of this policy as well as possible financing sources is needed, considers Bulgarian delegation. This approach is of exceptional significance for Bulgaria since the country has key location in Europe and ensures considerable part of the European Union external borders.
Along these lines our country was the initiator of the actual steps towards strengthening the co-operation in the field of security in the Western Balkans region. Within the framework of the Salzburg Forum, presided by Bulgaria /September 20 – 21, 2007, Pleven/, a Declaration on Establishment of a Group of Friends of Salzburg Forum from the Western Balkans was adopted at the Ministerial Meeting of the Member States of the organization.
The document clearly declares the common goal of the Salzburg Forum and the Group of Friends to enhance the citizens’ security level and the actual contribution to further stabilizing of the region. As a full member of the EU, Bulgaria actively implements the EU Security Policy and guarantees stability in the region and at the Union external borders. Ministry of Interior with its activities in all directions stands up for the security.
The practical co-operation in creating a Common European Asylum System in the EU Member States was among the topics of the forum in Ljubljana. Minister Rumen Petkov spoke with Franco Frattini – EU Commissioner on Justice, Freedom and Security.
