Road surfaces across Bulgaria are wet or partly or completely ice-bound. It is snowing in the Petrohan Pass and in Rousse. There is light rain turning to snow in the regions of Silistra, Dobrich, Shoumen, Razgrad, Veliko Turnovo, Pleven, Lovech, Vratsa, Montana, Kyustendil, Pernik, Stara Zagora, Smolyan and Sofia. Roads are closed to traffic in the mountain passes of Troyan-Kurnare, Etropole-Zlatitsa, Tvurditsa-Elena, Vurbitsa and Yundola, and between Shipkovo and Ribaritsa.

The Hainboaz Pass is closed for sanding. Heavy duty vehicles with trailers are not allowed via the Shipka Pass. Roads in Gabrovo Region are passable with precautions for harsh winter conditions. Many roads in the region are ice-bound. In Stara Zagora Region, ice formed on road surfaces after rain fell across the region on Sunday night.

Record-low temperatures were registered in the Danubian Plain on Saturday, with several towns reporting the lowest air temperatures since record began, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology said.

At minus 31.6C, the temperature was lowest in Sevlievo. Several towns reported temperatures which beat the previous records set in 1993: Knezha reported minus 27C (previous minus 26.5C); Veliko Turnovo minus 20.2C (down from minus 19C); and Lovech minus 19.5C (down from minus 18.8C).

On January 5, rescuers evacuated 70 vacationers who had been confined by snow drifts in two chalets in the Elena section of the Balkan Range for four days. The snow-bound company was
reached after chain trucks of the Civil Protection Service made a passage to the chalets, not too far apart, through the Tvurditsa Pass. Among the evacuees were many children and women, and a man with leg fractures. In a relief operation on Friday, a helicopter dropped food and fuel packages in the area of the chalets. A second relief flight was scheduled for Saturday but the evacuation made it unnecessary.
