The forecast of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC) for 18 per cent increase of electricity prices for households is not final, the percentage might change until June 26, when SEWRC will made its final decision, SEWRC Deputy Chairman Valentin Kirchev told journalists on Friday.

Regarding the European Commission's infringement procedure against Bulgaria in connection with the quota system related to electricity production and to supplies limiting the access to cross-border transmission capacity, a working group has been established with the Economy and Energy Ministry with the participation of SEWRC experts. The experts will do their best to prepare an answer to the European Commission on time, Kirchev said.

According to him, the market in Bulgaria has to be regulated, due to the fact that households are vulnerable as energy users. It is possible to take out small and medium-sized enterprises from the group of the vulnerable users, so that they can join the free market, Kirchev added.

The expectations that the electricity prices would drop after the introduction of the quarterly meter readings could not be met, as the price rise of electricity is predetermined by increased production costs due to the price hike of fuels, SEWRC Deputy Chairman said.

Currently SEWRC is carrying out a document check whether CEZ electricity distribution company is sending correct bills to its subscribers, BTA reported.
