Each week three or four hotels in Bulgaria file for ankruptcy. This statement made by Anelia Krushkova, chair of the National Tourism Agency, shocked businesses in the sector at the end of July. Mrs. Krushkova also said that Bulgaria is following in the footsteps of Spain, where authorities are buying bankrupt hotels and demolishing them in order to turn them into green areas.

It is too early to say whether such a scenario is possible in Bulgaria, but Profit.bg checked on how are hotels on the Black Sea Coast doing in mid-summer.

We were curious to see if they have already lowered prices to attract customers. Our basis for comparison is our May 31 price survey.

Again we start with Albena. 5-star hotels are currently charging 50 euro per night, while at the end of May the prices announced for August were at 60 euros.

Prices in Sunny Beach vary between 25 and 30 euros per person, compared to 30 – 35 euros as announced earlier. In Golden Sand resort, hotels are charging 15 euros less than what was announced in May.

A double room (breakfast included) in Balchik costs between 10 and 25 euro. At the beginning of the active season, prices were starting at 20 euros. Kavarna still has the same prices as at the beginning of the summer – a double room there costs around 20 euros. Prices are unchanged in Nessebar and Sozopol as well.

The 4-star all inclusive hotels in Saint Elias and Riviera resorts are also keeping room charges the same as two months ago.

Some statistics at the end - Bulgaria was visited by 1,803,415 foreign tourists in H1, according to data by the National Statistics Institute (NSI). Most of them came from Romania (393,762), Greece (363,621), Germany (173,669) and Great Britain (138,644). Whether those were enough to fill the hotels is not clear.
