Sofia airport handled a total of 1,537,766 passengers in the first half of 2008, up by 19% year on year. The airport registered the biggest passenger traffic in the months of May and June when nearly 570,000 passengers were serviced.
The busiest day of the Sofia airport in the first half of 2008 was January 5, when more than 14,000 passengers were handled.
The most preferred destination of Bulgarian passengers is London with its Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton airports. The Sofia airport handled a total of 198,500 passengers to and from London in the first six months of the year, up by 45% compared to the corresponding period of 2007. The increase may be put down to the opening of a Sofia-Luton flight by low-cost carrier easyJet.
Vienna was the second most preferred destination with 158,800 passengers from the Sofia airport in the first half of the year. The figure represents a 41-percent year on year increase. Germany's financial center Frankfurt was the third most preferred destination with a total of 96,000 passengers in the first six months of the year, up by 17%, compared to the year-ago period.
The cargo and postal shipments handled at the Sofia airport in the first half of the year rose by 2% to 9,077 tonnes.
Bulgaria Air was the leading company with 398,285 passengers handled in the first six months of the year, a 30-percent year on year increase. The foreign carriers transported a total of 970,921 passengers in the period, which also represented an increase of 30%, compared to the year-ago period.
Bulgaria Air handled a total of 48,663 passengers on the Sofia-Varna and Sofia-Bourgas destinations in the first half of the year, compared to 16,563 passengers for the year-ago period.
