BSE's Main Stock Exchange Index Up 19.13% in 2009

The main index of the Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE), SOFIX, has increased 19.13 per cent in 2009, year on year, to 427.27 points. According to BSE Executive Director Bistra Ilkova, this is not enough, because the index decreased most dramatically in 2008, so analysts are still to say what is in store.

This year, SOFIX fell to its lowest level on February 24, when the Exchange closed at 259.95 points. The index reached its highest level of the year on September 17, when it stood at 511.34 points.

Ilkova said that Bulgaria's gross domestic product (GDP) this year will decrease 5 per cent.

The market capitalization on BSE in 2009 has decreased 5.65 per cent to 11,597 million leva. At the end of 2008, the market capitalization on the Exchange was 12,292 million leva.

The market capitalization of BSE this year is equivalent to 17.71 per cent of Bulgaria's GDP.

This year, the turnover on BSE has decreased 46.39 per cent to 1,560 million leva. Last year, it stood at 2,910 million leva.

The year 2009 has seen the conclusion of 202,726 transactions for some 620 million securities. In 2008, there were 400,761 transactions for 740 million securities.

The broad index of BSE, BG-40, has increased 8.67 per cent, year on year, to 117.16 points, and BGTR30 has increased 22.73 per cent to 334.84 points. The only index which has decreased is BGTREIT, which has fallen 1.07 per cent to 48.01 points.

The new issues registered for trading on BSE decreased to 51 from 100 in 2008. On December 28, after the year's last exchange session, a traditional ceremony was held to award investment brokers who have distinguished themselves over the year. The BSE award for investment broker with the largest turnover in 2009 went to

Corporate Commercial Bank. Second in terms of turnover is Central Cooperative Bank, and third is Real Finance.

The broker with the largest number of transactions in 2009 is Karoll, followed by BenchMark Finance and Elana Trading. KBC Securities won the award for innovation product of 2009 for introducing derivative financial instruments.
