The European Commission may impose sanctions on Bulgaria due to delay in meeting of some of its requirements, such as the introduction of the universal emergency number 112 and the new identity cards.

Other problematic issues are NATURA 2000 and the problem with Sofia's litter. This is not the first written criticism Bulgaria receives from the institution.

In the end of spring Bulgaria received more than 50 warning letters from the EC. The Minister of European Affairs Gergana Grancarova said many of the issues discussed so far have already been solved. In her words the NATURA 2000 issue will not be a reason for sanctions as the Ministry of Ecology proposed 27 protection zones a few days.
