A renewal of the conflicts between Serbs and Albanians, which could spread into territories neighboring Serbia and Kosovo, is the most serious danger facing the Western Balkans after the declaration of Kosovo's independence, Bulgarian political analyst Ognyan Minchev told journalists on Sunday.

To limit the risks of possible conflicts, it is extremely important for regional security that the EU takes concrete steps, BTA reported citing Minchev's words.

An important political step will be the European guarantees to Serbia that its current national borders will not be violated. This is necessary because there are fears in the Serbian public that the processes of disintegration may continue after the declaration of Kosovo's independence, he said.

According to Minchev, it is the EU's responsibility to guarantee the territorial borders of Serbia and the other countries in the region, including Macedonia.

This could be the first decisive step for stability in the region, which could be followed by unequivocal procedures for the integration of the Western Balkan countries into the EU, the analyst said.
