The menu of the average Bulgarian household in 2008 continued to feature mainly white bread, poultry meat, perishable sausages, fish, potatoes, haricot beans and tomatoes, show data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) on the purchased amounts of staple foods per household.

Compared with the previous year, the statisticians report a decline in the consumption of white bread, perishable sausages, sunflower oil, apples, aerated drinks and cigarettes. There was

an increase in the consumption of poultry meat, fish, yogurt, eggs, melons and water melons, tomatoes, haricot beans, potatoes, sugar and beer.

According to NSI data, in 2008 the average Bulgarian household consumed 163.743 kg of white bread, 18.774 kg of poultry meat, 21.686 kg of perishable sausages, 10.361 kg of fresh and frozen fish, 50.239 kg of potatoes, 204.596 pieces of eggs, 41.739 kg of tomatoes and 8.670 kg of haricot beans.

A household last year drank 92.310 litres of aerated drinks, ate 53.248 kg of yogurt and cooked with 31.807 litres of oil.

For dessert, a household had 28.301 kg of melons and water melons and 17.374 kg of apples. Consumption of sugar in 2008 was 32.174 kg, and of beer 40.146 litres. A household smoked 2.132 kg of cigarettes on the average.
