Bulgaria's efforts to put a stop to the mismanagement of EU funds have been acknowledged in a letter by Thierry Cretin of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) to Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

Cretin led an OLAF delegation to Bulgaria in February 2010. In his letter he takes stock of the efforts made by the Bulgarian government to improve the national system for the protection of the financial interests of the European Union. The capacity of the AFCOS unit with the Interior Ministry for cooperation with OLAF have been strengthened significantly, the letter says.

"I believe that the intense exchange of information and the mutual trust that we have built have laid the groundwork for good results," said Cretin. In his letter he underscores Prime Minister Borissov's contribution to the good cooperation between OLAF and the AFCOS unit and voices his confidence that in 2011 the relevant Bulgarian authorities would continue their activities to detect, uncover and punish fraud and corruption practices related to EU funds.
