Construction of New Homes in Bulgaria Up 42% in 2007

According to data released by the National Statistics Institute, some 2,697 residential buildings (18,864 units) were built in Bulgaria last year.
This is an annual hike of 42% in construction activity. The total built-up area last year stood at 938,210 sqm, the data also showed.
Burgas had the most newly built homes (5,158), followed by Varna (3,471). Those cities also have the biggest number of completed buildings, respectively 538 and 535.
The capital city Sofia ranks third with 3,431 new homes, which is 115% up from the previous year.
Bulgaria's second biggest city Plovdiv is forth with 197 residential buildings and 1,529 new homes.
Other cities with a lot of construction activity are Veliko Tarnovo, Dobrich and Pazardjik with 145, 138 and 118 new residential buildings respectively. The number of new homes in those cities stands at 993, 507 and 425.
On the other hand, the cities with the least new buildings are Vidin (9), Smolyan (9) and Kiustendil (6). The number of new home units in those cities is respectively 16, 93 and 50.
The National Statistics Institute also released data on the number of demolished buildings in 2007 – a total of 479 and 660 home units.
