The slumps of the global capital markets are affecting the most the stock exchanges in the emerging markets and the Bulgarian market in particular.

The table below shows some of the biggest decliners on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE) among the companies that traditionally attract investors' attention.

Kremikovtzi's shareholders suffered the grave consequences of the decline in the price of the stock after the news on the insolvency of the company. The stock price of the steel mill has dropped by 95% to 1.89 leva per share since its last peak in October.

Hydropneumotechnica's stock depreciated by nearly 94% to 15.3 lea per share after only 4 shares sold, compared to levels of 250 leva per share last year (deals in the stock were sealed even at a price of 287 leva per share).

Veliko Tarnovo-based pipe maker Kapitan Dyado Nikola is the other record decliner. The stock of the company has lost 87% of its value to 29 leva per share. The stock was traded at a similar prices in august 2004, or more than 4 years ago.

Transstroy's stock, buoyed by the growth of infrastructure companies, changed hands last year at prices of above 200 leva per share. The stock was last traded at a price of 28 leva per share, which represents an 86-percent decline.

The stock prices of Balkan and Lessoplast have also dropped more than 85% since their last peak in 2007.

Blue chips Orgachim and Lead & Zinc Complex rank ninth and tenth with a decline of 84 and 82%, respectively.

Even the two insurance companies listed on BSE have lost around 73% of their value each, which puts them among the worst performing stocks at present.
