Parliament Adopts Higher Bank Deposit Guarantee

The state guarantee for personal bank deposits in Bulgaria was raised from 40,000 to 100,000 leva with amendments to the Bank Deposits Guarantee Act, adopted on second reading by the parliament today.
The state will not guarantee bank deposits made by pension and insurance funds, except for supplementary mandatory pension insurance funds.
The Mps voted down a proposal envisaging the Bank Deposit Guarantee Fund to be able to guarantee on behalf of the state for a period of one year the loans offered on the interbank market.
The parliament discussed on first reading two proposal for amendments to the Bank Deposits Guarantee Act. Maria Kapon's proposal envisaged the bank deposit guarantee to be raised from 40,000 leva to 50,000 euros. Ovcharov and Velchev's bill envisaged raising the guarantee to 100,000 leva.
In order to be reviewed on second reading the two bills had to be merged into one and the Mps were able to make proposals of their own.
