Foreign investments in Bulgaria in 2008 will add up to about 6,000 million euro and may exceed this figure in 2009, Deputy Economy and Energy Minister Yavor Kuyumdjiev told journalists after the Council of Ministers' meeting on Tuesday.
Kuyumdjiev said that Bulgaria may attract major companies to boost exports by setting up technology parks. He mentioned the Czech Republic where companies attracted to technology parks account for about 60 per cent of the country's exports.
Commenting on the newly-adopted export strategy for 2009-2013, Kuyumdjiev said that Bulgaria has export potential in industry and mechanical engineering.
Without naming names, he said that major European and Japanese car makers have expressed interest in setting up business here, and that a Chinese company wants to make turbines in Bulgaria.
Kuyumdjiev said that despite the crisis, there is free money which Bulgaria can attract with its real economy. Besides, the lowest tax rates and cheaper labour compared with Western countries give Bulgaria a competitive edge.
