The share of the residential sector in total new construction sites initiated on the local market in the first five months of 2009 continues to exceed 50 percent, in spite of the dramatic drop in investments, as the sector is mainly supported by own works, Standard.ro is reporting.

In the first part of this year, 2,605 new construction sites were initiated nationwide, of which 58 percent are residential sector projects, according to an analysis by the Infobau consultancy company in the construction field.

"The number of construction sites at the national level seems extremely small to me, especially considering that homes on the residential segment are mainly own works. My opinion is that the ratio in the first part of this year is one construction site in five in the same period last year," Andrei Diaconescu, Partner of the Capital investment company, told Business Standard.

"On a normal market, if we were to compare the commercial and residential sectors, the ratio is one commercial construction site for ten residential ones, while between offices and the residential sector, the ratio is 2.5 office construction sites for ten residential sites," Diaconescu added.
