Bulgaria's gross external debt amounted to EUR 36,808.9 million (105.7% of GDP) as of end-July 2010, a decline by EUR 999.1 million less compared to the end of 2009 (EUR 37,808.1 million, 107.9% of GDP), data of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) show. The highest debt decrease was the decrease (by EUR 1,337.5 million, 16%) of Banks' liabilities.

Compared to end-July 2009 (EUR 37,081.4 million) the gross external debt decreased by EUR 272.5 million. As of end-July 2010 long-term liabilities amounted to EUR 25,147.4 million (68.3% of total debt), and short-term liabilities came to EUR 11,661.5 million (31.7% of total debt).

General Government's external debt was EUR 2,802.4 million3 (8% of GDP) as of end-July 2010, increasing by EUR 1.1 million against the end of 2009. Compared to end-July 2009 (EUR 2,715.9 million) the sector's debt increased by EUR 86.5 million.

Banks' external debt was EUR 7,035.4 million (20.2% of GDP). It decreased by EUR 1,337.5 million (16%) against the end of 2009. Compared to end-July 2009 (EUR 8,252.3 million) the sector's debt decreased by EUR 1,216.9 million.

Other Sectors' debt4 was EUR 12,111 million. It decreased by EUR 50.8 million relative to the end of 2009. Compared to end-July 2009 (EUR 12,034.4 million) the sector's debt increased by EUR 76.7 million. As of end-July 2010 the stock of Intercompany Lending was EUR 14,860.1 million, which was EUR 388 million (2.7%) more against the end of 2009.

Compared to end-July 2009 (EUR 14,078.9 million) the sector's debt increased by EUR 781.2 million.

In January - July 2010, gross external debt service was EUR 4,710.2 million (13.5% of GDP) against EUR 4,127.5 million (11.8% of GDP) for the same period in 2009.

In January - July 2010, loans and deposits received from non-residents were EUR 2,931.8 million (8.4% of GDP)

against EUR 3,654.4 million (10.4% of GDP) for the same period in 2009. General Government received EUR 113 million (3.9%), Banks received EUR 989.1 million (33.7%), Other Sectors4 - EUR 529.9 million (18.1%) and the newly disbursed Intercompany Lending amounted to EUR 1,299.8 million (44.3%).

As of end-July 2010, net external debt was EUR 19,314.4 million, decreasing by EUR 181.5 million (0.9%) against the end of 2009 (EUR 19,495.9 million). As of end-July 2010 as a percent of GDP it amounted to 55.5%, decreasing by 0.2 p.p. compared to end-2009 (55.6%). As of July 30, 2010 gross external assets amounted to EUR 17,494.5 million against EUR 18,312.2 million as of end-December 2009.

As of end-July 2009 net external debt was EUR 20,154.7 million or 57.5% of GDP.
