At the end of 2010 the estimates of the economic condition of the country and of households remain almost identical to those at the end of 2009. Ten per cent of the interviewees were of the opinion that the economic climate is improving, 42 per cent thought it is the same and 48 per cent said the situation is deteriorating, according to the regular quarterly survey of the Alpha Research polling agency conducted between December 4 and 12, 2010.
Funds set aside in previous years have also contributed to maintaining the material standard of families as the polling agency research shows that 28 per cent of the Bulgarians now have some savings at the moment. Over half of them, however, (16 per cent) have withdrawn from their savings in the past few months.
Traditionally, at the end of each year optimism for the near future is on the uplift, with slightly over one-third optimists against 24 to 27 per cent pessimists. The most considerable share, though, is that of the people who do not see any signs of essential change to be expected next year.
Considering the fact that the level of income of Bulgarian citizens remains low (Eurostat data give it a mere 40 per cent of the average in the EU, measured by purchasing capacity), the drop in foreign investments and consumption, the possible difference between expectations and reality may prove a catalyst of displeasure and tension in the worst-hit social groups, social scientists forecast.
The economic upsurge, increase of employment and income of the people forecast by the incumbent after two difficult economic years may give an impetus to social optimism. As in all European countries, the economic processes in Bulgaria will have a decisive say in the dynamics of the political situation, the social scientists concluded.
